Sunday, 28th: 10 - 5:30pm

In this workshop, we will be exploring a more intuitive, organic approach to art making. This improvisational approach is more spontaneous and fun, than more traditional methods. It can help beginning, and even seasoned artists overcome their fear of the blank canvas. The process begins with an open mind, and allows the painting to evolve gradually, as one layer, color, line, etc. informs the next. We will be teaching a variety of mixed media techniques that can be used in this artmaking process.

This process allows our psyche or subconscious mind "out to play" and to be expressed. It also gives us the opportunity to explore new possibilities. We can begin to express what we are feeling or thinking through color, imagery, line, texture, mark making, etc. The word “play” is key here. When we play, we tap into parts of ourselves that get shut down, closed off, forgotten, as we get older. Learning to open up and tap into that part of ourselves can make for very interesting art! Once a painting is started in this way, we can then begin to build on what is there ...let the painting guide us. We may not know what it is we want to express or what is being expressed, but that's okay, at some point that will be revealed. The psyche is trying to express something. You may be surprised at the outcome!

Artists skills, and rules of composition can enhance (or inhibit) the flow of creativity. They are good to have, but it is easy to get stuck there, cutting off our intuition and the flow of energy. Balance, rhythm, repetition, focal point, contrast, etc. are pleasing to the eye. This is something that may or may not matter to you. If it is, then it is important not to let it block you. Let it be secondary to your process. Begin with your intuition. Play, have fun, explore, express! Do these things first, and let the rest come naturally.
